The Sahara Desert Month-by-Month Weather Breakdown
1- Autumn: The Sweet Spot (October & November)

October: Expect ideal daytime temperatures hovering around 27°C (80°F) with pleasantly cool nights near 15°C (59°F). The light during late afternoon is pure gold for photography, and the nearby city of Erfoud celebrates its annual Date Harvest Festival.
November: Daytimes remain comfortably mild around 22°C (71°F), while nights begin to feel crisp (10°C / 50°F). Autumn skies are exceptionally clear, making November one of the best months for stargazing and capturing the Milky Way over Erg Chebbi.
2- Winter: Crisp Days & Starlit Campfire Nights (December to February)
Winter in the Sahara surprises many travelers. The sun shines brightly during the day, but as soon as it dips below the horizon, the temperature drops rapidly.
December: Crisp, sunny days around 19°C (66°F) make exploring the dunes very comfortable. Spending Christmas or New Year’s Eve around a crackling campfire listening to live local Gnaoua music is an incredible experience—just be sure to pack warm wool layers for overnight lows near 4°C (39°F).
January: The quietest and coldest month of the year. Daytime temperatures average 18°C (64°F), while night temps can touch 2°C (35°F). If you enjoy peaceful travel without crowd hustle, January offers pristine, undisturbed sand dunes.
February: Early spring starts showing up. Afternoon highs warm up to 20°C (68°F), and on the scenic drive down from the High Atlas Mountains through Ouarzazate, you’ll catch almond trees beginning to bloom.
3- Spring: Warm Sunshine & Festival Vibes (March to May)
Spring is one of the most popular seasons for a Morocco desert trip, offering long sunny days and pleasant evening campfires.
March: Daytime temps climb to a very comfortable 25°C (77°F). March also brings cultural excitement, as M'hamid El Ghizlane frequently hosts the International Nomads Festival, showcasing desert music, crafts, and heritage.
Note: Spring can bring occasional windy days, so having a traditional Berber turban (tagelmust) handy is essential.
April: Beautiful warm days (28°C / 82°F) and balmy evenings (14°C / 57°F) make April a favorite for families and small group tours. Sunrises and sunsets during this month are breathtaking.
May: May starts pushing the heat around 32°C–35°C (90°F+). The secret to enjoying May is scheduling: hit the dunes for early morning quad biking or sunset camel rides, and spend the mid-day relaxing at a desert lodge pool.
4- Summer: Extreme Heat & Quiet Solitude (June to September)
The summer months bring intense heat waves to the desert, with temperatures routinely soaring past 40°C–45°C (104°F–113°F+).
June to August: We generally advise against deep dune camping or long camel treks during mid-summer unless you are specifically prepared for extreme heat. If you do travel during summer, we recommend staying in air-conditioned desert camps or local lodges with pools in Merzouga, limiting your dune excursions strictly to early dawn or late dusk.
September: As summer fades, September brings a gradual drop back to 33°C (91°F). The evenings cool down nicely, marking the transition back into comfortably warm desert travel.
